Many characters and place names in Black Myth: Wukong have recognizable coordinates in Journey to the West and Chinese folklore. You do not, however, need to finish a full course in classical literature before playing.

Separate the source from the adaptation

Journey to the West provides the broad cultural setting: a pilgrimage, monsters, and an order of gods and Buddhas. The game reorganizes those materials into new characters and conflicts. A familiar name is best treated as the starting point of an adaptation, not as the answer to its plot.

The Destined One is the player's vantage point

Players enter the world as the Destined One. This identity allows the story to look back on Wukong's legacy while preserving room for a new journey. Pay attention to how characters describe the past; their perspective can matter more than simply recognizing a name.

Yaoguai are more than combat targets

Spirits, ghosts, monsters, and gods in traditional supernatural tales often have complicated origins. The game's enemies also communicate information through environments, objects, and relationships. Reading portrait entries and observing a location outside combat can fill in much of the worldbuilding.

A lightweight reading order

For some background without turning reading into a prerequisite, start with the Havoc in Heaven, the members of the pilgrimage, and a few of its major trials. Then look up the chapters connected to characters as you encounter them. This approach adds context while reducing accidental spoilers.
